'I hope you can feel a spark of my fire.'

A delightful play on words sprang to mind, when Van Dorp was first asked to express his thoughts on recycling "Re-cycle… to bike over again" As an artist, the materials give him inspiration for his ideas. He has never been consciously preoccupied with recycling or giving new meaning to used products. Materials like slate, rusty steel and processed pieces of wood have an easy appeal to him. He once by chance received a lot of rubber teats from baby bottles. This gave him his first impulse to recycle. The teats, designed for such an innocent and vulnerable group, contrasted with steel to produce a warm maternal form.

Van Dorp enjoys the moment when people feel the spark of the fire that he has put into his artwork: 'When the spark jumps over I hope it will set you on another path that will surprise and touch you.' The symposium has energised him through interaction with other artists. It has given him a lot to reflect on.
