Recycle Art

Gular Mustafa

'we have been here before'

Mustafa's first association when thinking of recycling is with 'reminiscence'. She explains: 'What is gone, is good. When my life comes to an end, everything is good. So: recycling is surely good.' She always works with a combination of old and new materials. She tries to bring out the contrast between them in her artwork (collages and precious metalwork). She chooses the materials, because of their inherent beauty, and not from a conscious decision to recycle. The basis for her collages is paper and she uses silver or iron for her work with precious metals. She combines both with a contrasting material, such as the warmth of wool with the cool of steel or the textures of rope and fabric with old iron.

As a child Mustafa made a lot of things with her friends that they used in their outdoor play. The bamboo chain, which she made for the 'Recycle Art' project in the gardens of World Art Delft, dates back to her childhood…reminiscence…recycling. The chain plays with the wind, with the space and with memories. The elements play with the chain and the wind makes noises as it blows through the bamboo links. Her work tells a story to everyone and everyone has their own interpretation of her work.
